At least 30 people, including five police officers, were injured in a clash between residents of two villages in Gopalganj following a dispute over a football match. The violence erupted in the Ghushe Char area on Monday (19 October), escalating into a confrontation involving locally made weapons and sticks after nightfall.
According to local sources, a football match was being played between residents of Fakirkandi and Ghushe Char villages at a local field. An argument broke out between the two sides during the game, creating tension among players and supporters.
The situation deteriorated when Hannan Mollah, a resident of Ghushe Char, was allegedly attacked with locally made weapons by people from Fakirkandi village. He sustained injuries after being hacked during the incident.
The attack reportedly intensified tensions between the two villages, leading to a larger confrontation later that night. Residents from both sides gathered with sticks and locally made weapons, with some using torches to illuminate the area. Announcements over loudspeakers were also reportedly used as people mobilised amid the escalating tensions.
The confrontation spread as members of the two groups engaged in violence, leaving at least 30 people injured. The injured included five police officers who were attempting to bring the situation under control.
Upon receiving information about the clash, police deployed more than 100 personnel to the scene to restore order and prevent further violence. Their intervention helped bring the situation under control, although the confrontation resulted in injuries on both sides.
The incident has raised concerns among local residents, as a dispute that began during a sporting event escalated into a serious clash between neighbouring communities. Such incidents can pose risks not only to those directly involved but also to bystanders and law enforcement personnel responding to the violence.
Mohammad Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station, said the situation was now normal. However, he added that police remained on alert to deal with any further incidents.
Details regarding the medical condition of the injured, the possible filing of a case and any further legal action had not been provided in the initial report.
