A report of a fire at a store building at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka triggered concern on Tuesday afternoon, 20 October. Two Fire Service units rushed to the scene after receiving information about the incident and brought the situation under control within minutes. However, an airport official denied that a fire had broken out, saying smoke had developed inside the building.
According to the available information, the Fire Service received the report at around 2pm and promptly dispatched two units to the airport’s store building. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and took swift action to address the situation. The smoke was brought under control within a few minutes.
No significant damage or casualties were reported in connection with the incident. However, the exact cause of the smoke remained unclear at the time of reporting.
Mohammad Riaz Uddin, assistant director of the airport, denied reports of a fire. He said there had been no fire inside the store building and that only smoke had developed. According to him, the Fire Service responded quickly and brought the situation under control.
The discrepancy between the initial reports and the airport official’s statement has left some aspects of the incident unclear. No immediate information was available about the source of the smoke or whether an electrical fault or another problem had occurred inside the building.
As Bangladesh’s principal international airport, Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport handles large numbers of passengers and flights every day. Ensuring safety across its buildings and facilities is therefore a priority, particularly when an unusual incident involving smoke or a potential fire occurs.
It was not immediately known whether the incident disrupted flight operations or caused damage to equipment or stored materials inside the building. Details about any investigation into the cause of the smoke were also unavailable.
Further information is needed to establish precisely what happened inside the store building and whether any additional safety measures will be taken following the incident.
