Jawad Abrar Sets New Benchmark in Bangladesh First-Class Cricket

Young opener Jawad Abrar has made history in Bangladesh’s first-class cricket by registering the fastest half-century by a Bangladeshi batter in the format. The promising cricketer reached his fifty in just 22 deliveries during the ongoing National Cricket League (NCL), surpassing a record that had remained untouched for 11 years.

Although Abrar narrowly missed out on a century, his remarkable batting performance secured him a place in the country’s domestic cricket record books. The former Bangladesh Under-19 batter eventually departed for 91 runs, falling just nine short of the three-figure milestone.

The previous record belonged to hard-hitting all-rounder Ziaur Rahman, who had scored a half-century from 24 deliveries during the 2014–15 National Cricket League season. His achievement stood for more than a decade before Abrar broke it by reaching the landmark two balls quicker.

Representing Barishal Division against Rajshahi Division, Abrar produced an outstanding display of attacking batting during his team’s second innings.

From the beginning, the young opener adopted an aggressive approach, putting pressure on the opposition bowlers with his confident stroke play. Boundaries came regularly as he accelerated towards his half-century, reaching the milestone in only 22 balls.

The achievement established a new national record for the fastest fifty by a Bangladeshi batter in first-class cricket, marking a significant moment in the National Cricket League.

Abrar did not abandon his attacking approach after completing the record-breaking half-century. He continued to accumulate runs, combining powerful boundary hitting with an effort to build a substantial innings for his team.

His innings eventually ended at 91 from 94 deliveries, featuring nine fours and four sixes. Despite missing a century by a narrow margin, his contribution proved crucial to Barishal’s recovery against Rajshahi.

The performance was particularly notable given the demands of first-class cricket, where batters are generally expected to demonstrate patience, concentration and the ability to occupy the crease for extended periods.

Abrar’s rapid half-century highlighted his attacking capabilities in the longer format, while his eventual score of 91 demonstrated his ability to extend an explosive start into a meaningful contribution.

Having previously represented Bangladesh at Under-19 level, Abrar has now added a significant domestic achievement to his developing cricket career.

His innings also played an important role in changing the momentum of the match. Barishal, seeking to recover their position against Rajshahi, benefited considerably from the opener’s aggressive batting.

By the close of the third day’s play, Barishal had reached 249 for five in their second innings, establishing a lead of 21 runs over Rajshahi.

Although the advantage remained modest, Abrar’s contribution helped Barishal move ahead and remain competitive in the contest.

With five wickets already lost, the team’s ability to extend its lead would depend on the remaining batters. Any additional runs could prove valuable as the match progresses towards its conclusion.

For Abrar, the innings represented both a personal milestone and an important contribution to his side’s efforts. Breaking a record that had stood since the 2014–15 season added particular significance to his performance.

The young opener’s achievement also demonstrated how attacking batting can influence matches even in the traditionally patient environment of first-class cricket.

While the disappointment of missing a century may linger, his record-breaking fifty ensured that the innings would be remembered for more than its final score.

By completing his half-century in just 22 deliveries, Abrar has established a new benchmark for Bangladeshi batters in first-class cricket, bringing an end to Ziaur Rahman’s 11-year hold on the record.

His 91-run innings against Rajshahi stands as a memorable performance in the ongoing National Cricket League and a notable achievement in his emerging career.
