Taskin Makes Major Leap as Shoriful Nears ODI Top Ten

Bangladesh fast bowlers Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam have made significant progress in the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) One-Day International rankings, with both moving within striking distance of the world’s top 10 bowlers.

The updated rankings, released on Wednesday (21 October), show Taskin climbing nine places to 12th in the ODI bowling standings, while his teammate Shoriful has advanced two positions to 11th.

The improvements provide encouragement for Bangladesh’s pace bowling department, particularly as the national team continues its campaign in the ongoing tri-nation series in the United Arab Emirates.

Taskin’s remarkable rise follows an impressive individual performance in the competition involving Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe.

In Bangladesh’s opening match against Zimbabwe, the right-arm fast bowler claimed three wickets, producing a notable performance despite his team’s disappointing result. Bangladesh eventually suffered a 99-run defeat, but Taskin’s contribution stood out in an otherwise difficult encounter.

His nine-place advancement reflects the value of strong individual performances in international cricket. Although Bangladesh could not secure victory, Taskin’s bowling efforts helped improve his position among the leading ODI bowlers.

Shoriful has also strengthened his standing in the rankings. The left-arm pacer moved up two places to 11th, putting him immediately ahead of Taskin and just one position outside the top 10.

The presence of two Bangladesh fast bowlers among the leading 12 is an encouraging sign for the national side, which continues to depend on its pace attack for early breakthroughs and control during crucial stages of an innings.

In modern ODI cricket, fast bowlers play a particularly important role with both the new and older ball. Their ability to take wickets in the opening overs, restrict scoring during the middle stages and deliver effectively towards the end of an innings can have a decisive influence on match results.

While Bangladesh’s pace duo enjoyed positive movement, Afghanistan’s star leg-spinner Rashid Khan further strengthened his position at the summit of the ODI bowling rankings.

Rashid produced an outstanding performance against Zimbabwe, claiming four wickets for just 17 runs. His impressive figures helped raise his rating to 742 points, extending his advantage over the other leading bowlers.

Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed occupies second place in the standings, while South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj is third. Rashid holds an 80-point advantage over his nearest challengers, underlining his commanding position in the format.

The Afghan spinner has established a reputation for combining wicket-taking ability with economical bowling. His latest performance against Zimbabwe has reinforced his standing as one of the most influential bowlers in limited-overs international cricket.

Afghanistan also recorded a significant improvement in the ODI batting rankings, with Sedikullah Atal making one of the biggest advances in the latest update.

Atal climbed 12 places to 20th after scoring an impressive century against Zimbabwe. The Afghan batter struck 102 runs from 110 deliveries, an innings that played an important role in his rise through the rankings.

His performance demonstrated the value of substantial individual contributions, particularly for batters seeking to establish themselves among the leading players in international cricket.

Elsewhere, Pakistan’s Salman Agha and England’s Ben Duckett also improved their positions following the series in Rawalpindi.

Salman moved up to 12th in the ODI batting rankings, while Duckett advanced to 13th. Their progress was among several changes recorded in the latest assessment of international batting performances.

The rankings update also brought movement in Twenty20 International cricket following the series between India and the West Indies.

West Indies captain Shai Hope climbed two positions to ninth in the T20I batting rankings, securing a place among the world’s top 10 batters in the shortest international format.

Hope’s improvement represents a positive development for the Caribbean side, which has traditionally relied on aggressive batting and match-winning individual performances in T20 cricket.

His teammate Sherfane Rutherford also enjoyed a considerable rise, advancing six places to 18th in the T20I batting standings.

Rutherford’s progress adds to the encouraging developments for the West Indies batting unit, with both players strengthening their positions following recent international appearances.

There was also good news for West Indies left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, who climbed 10 places to 26th in the T20I bowling rankings.

Motie’s advancement highlights the importance of effective spin bowling in a format often associated with attacking batting and high scoring rates.

The ICC player rankings are updated regularly to reflect performances in international fixtures. Changes in individual ratings are influenced by several factors, including the quality of opposition, match performances and the circumstances in which those contributions are made.

For Bangladesh, the latest update is particularly significant because of the progress achieved by Taskin and Shoriful.

Taskin’s nine-place rise is especially encouraging given that his three-wicket performance came in a match Bangladesh lost heavily. His improvement demonstrates that individual excellence can still receive recognition despite an unfavourable team result.

Shoriful’s advancement to 11th also places him within reach of the top 10, providing another positive indication for Bangladesh’s pace bowling department.

With both fast bowlers now occupying positions immediately outside the leading group, maintaining consistent performances in upcoming international fixtures will be crucial to their prospects of climbing further.

Their progress offers Bangladesh a welcome boost as the national side looks to strengthen its performances and achieve greater consistency in ODI cricket.
