Measles Outbreak Escalates as Eight More Fatalities Push Total Deaths to 1,222

Eight more people suffering from measles symptoms have died across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, according to the latest bulletin released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Saturday.

The statistics, covering the period from 8:00 AM on Friday to 8:00 AM on Saturday, push the total nationwide death toll from measles-like symptoms to 1,118 since the outbreak began monitoring on 15 March. Combined with 104 laboratory-confirmed measles deaths, the total number of fatalities attributed to the disease now stands at 1,222.

Regional data indicates that the latest fatalities were distributed across four divisions. Dhaka recorded three deaths, while Sylhet and Chittagong reported two each, and Mymensingh registered one. No fatalities were confirmed strictly through laboratory testing during this specific 24-hour period.

Epidemiologists emphasise that while measles can affect individuals of any age, young children remain the most vulnerable demographic. Health experts note that during widespread outbreaks, deaths occurring alongside classic clinical symptoms—such as high fever, coughing, runny nose, and characteristic skin rashes—are clinically categorized under the broader measles mortality tally to ensure comprehensive public health monitoring.

The latest DGHS report highlights a continuous influx of new cases. Over the past 24 hours, 1,014 individuals were reported presenting with symptoms characteristic of the viral infection. This brings the cumulative total of symptomatic cases reported across the country to 219,884 since mid-March.

Laboratory testing confirmed 51 new measles cases within the same 24-hour window, bringing the total number of laboratory-verified cases to 23,324. Hospitalisation rates also remain high across public and private healthcare facilities. A cumulative total of 195,514 patients presenting with measles symptoms have required inpatient care since the outbreak began. Among those admitted, 187,605 individuals have recovered and been discharged from medical centers.

Measles is a highly contagious airborne disease caused by a virus in the paramyxovirus family. It spreads easily through coughing and sneezing, contact with secretions, or direct contact with an infected person. Complications can prove severe, particularly in malnourished young children or those with weakened immune systems, often leading to severe diarrhoea, ear infections, pneumonia, or encephalitis. Public health authorities continue to stress the critical importance of routine immunization programmes, target-driven vaccination drives, and early clinical intervention to curb further transmission and manage clinical complications effectively.
