Four Pilots Killed in Mid-Air Philippines Air Force Crash

A routine training mission ended in tragedy on Friday afternoon when two military aircraft collided mid-air, claiming the lives of all four pilots on board. The fatal incident occurred within the perimeter of Fernando Air Base, situated south of the Philippine capital, Manila.

According to official statements released by the Philippine Air Force, the aircraft involved were two SF-260 single-propeller trainers. Both light attack and training planes went down directly inside the airfield boundaries during tactical instruction exercises. Air Force spokesperson Colonel Alvin Capingian confirmed that both standard two-seater aircraft were destroyed upon impact, resulting in immediate fatalities for all aircrew involved. Emergency response teams rushed to the crash site, but no survivors could be recovered. Officials confirmed that no civilian casualties or ground infrastructure damage occurred as a result of the collision.

Military authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the precise cause of the mid-air collision. Investigators are currently examining technical telemetry, atmospheric conditions, and communication logs to establish whether mechanical failure, pilot error, or adverse weather contributed to the disaster.

The tragedy highlights a troubling safety pattern within the Philippine armed forces. The nation’s military fleet has suffered a series of deadly aviation accidents in recent years, prompting growing scrutiny regarding maintenance standards and the operational lifespan of its aging aerial inventory. The SF-260, an Italian-designed light aircraft widely used for basic pilot training and tactical reconnaissance, has been a staple of the Philippine military arsenal for decades.

Ground operations and flight maneuvers at Fernando Air Base remain temporarily restricted while air safety experts inspect the wreckage and clear debris from the airfield. Military officials expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families of the fallen aviators, promising a thorough and transparent inquiry into the disaster.
