A 20-year-old factory worker was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in the Dhalpur area of Jatrabari in the capital on Tuesday evening. The deceased, identified as Maruf, also known as Dukhu Miah, was attacked around 7:00 pm near the Wasa Gate inside the Dhaka South City Corporation waste management vehicle garage.
Family members rushed Maruf to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition, where the attending physician declared him dead at approximately 7:45 pm.
According to Maruf’s cousin, Bithi Akhtar, the young man worked at an aluminium utensil manufacturing factory in Dayaganj. On Tuesday evening, he returned home after completing his day shift, as he routinely did. Shortly after arriving, he informed his wife, Mim, that he was stepping out for a brief errand.
A short while later, gunshots echoed through the surrounding neighbourhood near the Wasa Gate. Hearing reports of gunfire in the vicinity, Maruf’s family rushed to the spot only to discover that he had sustained a gunshot wound to the right side of his chest.
Relatives insisted that Maruf was an ordinary worker with no known rivalries, criminal associations, or local political involvement. His family expressed complete shock over the incident, stating they were unaware of any threats to his life or why anyone would target him.
Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of the DMCH Police Outpost, confirmed that the deceased bore a bullet wound on the right side of his chest. The body has been transferred to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Jatrabari Police Station has been formally notified of the incident. Law enforcement personnel have initiated an investigation at the crime scene to determine the motive behind the shooting and identify the individuals responsible.
