A suspicion of marital infidelity took a tragic turn in the capital on Tuesday evening when an 18-year-old woman was stabbed to death, allegedly by her husband, inside a residential garage in the Turag area of Dhaka.
The victim, identified as Runa Akter, was the daughter of Mohammad Hadis Miah hailing from Satkanda village in the Netrokona Sadar sub-district. Her husband, 24-year-old Opu Miah, who comes from Dapunia village in the same sub-district, was apprehended by local residents immediately after the attack and handed over to the police.
The fatal assault occurred at approximately 9:15 PM on Tuesday, 27 October, at the far end of Road 6/A, Sector 5, in Dalipara under Turag Police Station. The incident unfolded inside the ground-floor garage of House 51, where a heated marital dispute quickly escalated into physical violence.
According to Mostafizur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Turag Police Station, an argument broke out between the couple over accusations of extra-marital involvement. During the altercation, Opu Miah allegedly produced a sharp knife and inflicted multiple stab wounds on Runa’s chest and body. Hearing her cries for help, local residents rushed to the garage and found her bleeding heavily on the floor.
Bystanders acted swiftly to transport the critically injured teenager to Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital in Uttara. However, attending physicians declared her dead upon arrival due to severe blood loss from the deep puncture wounds.
Local residents confronted Opu Miah at the scene, disarming him and holding him until law enforcement personnel arrived. Police officers took custody of the suspect along with the weapon used in the crime.
- Preliminary investigations indicate that ongoing friction stemming from suspicion over his wife’s relationship with another individual led to the violent outburst. Police officials stated that legal procedures are currently under way, including the preparation of the inquest report and the transfer of the body for a post-mortem examination to establish the precise cause of death. Further interrogations will determine the full circumstances surrounding the murder.
