The decision was announced in a statement signed by Minhazul Islam Bhuiyan, joint general secretary of the central Jubo Dal, on Tuesday, 27 October.
According to the statement, Mintu, joint convener of the Gurudaspur upazila unit of Jubo Dal, was expelled from the organisation, including his primary membership, over allegations of involvement in an incident that resulted in the death of a fellow member of an affiliated organisation.
The decision was approved by Jubo Dal central executive committee president Abdul Monaem Munna and general secretary Mohammad Nurul Islam Nayan.
The statement also made it clear that the organisation would not accept responsibility for any misconduct by the expelled individual. Leaders and activists at all levels were instructed to maintain no organisational ties with him.
Fatal attack on Shakil
According to local residents and police sources, Shakil was returning home on foot from Chanchkaire market at around 10pm on 14 October when he came under attack.
As he reached the area in front of Noor Academy, two helmet-wearing assailants allegedly opened fire at him. Shakil attempted to escape by running away, but the attackers pursued him on a motorcycle.
They caught up with him in front of Shahida Jalil Government Primary School, where they allegedly attacked him repeatedly with a machete and a Chinese cleaver, leaving him critically injured.
Local people rescued Shakil and initially took him to Gurudaspur Upazila Health Complex. He was subsequently transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated. From there, he was taken to Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) in Dhaka for advanced treatment.
After 12 days of treatment, Shakil died at the hospital at around 8pm on Monday. His death prompted widespread grief in Gurudaspur and neighbouring Baraigram, where he was known as a local Chhatra Dal leader.
Funeral prayers held in Dhaka and Natore
Following news of Shakil’s death, State Minister for Social Welfare Farzana Sharmin Putul and central leaders of Chhatra Dal visited the hospital on Tuesday.
The first funeral prayer was held at 2pm in front of the BNP’s central office in Nayapaltan, Dhaka. His body was then taken to Gurudaspur, arriving at around 8pm.
A second funeral prayer was held at the grounds of Bilchalan Shaheed Shamsuzzoha College. Shakil was subsequently buried at Purannapara Central Cemetery.
His death has intensified calls for a thorough investigation into the attack and accountability for those responsible.
MP promises legal action if his son is found guilty
On Tuesday at around 11am, Natore-4 MP Mohammad Abdul Aziz visited Shakil’s grieving family to offer his condolences.
Addressing the circumstances surrounding the case, the lawmaker said he had been monitoring the situation since the attack and had covered the expenses required for Shakil’s medical treatment. However, he said he had not expected the young leader to die.
Abdul Aziz also said he had instructed the officer-in-charge of Gurudaspur Police Station to uncover the circumstances behind the killing.
He stressed that anyone found guilty on the basis of credible evidence should face legal proceedings, regardless of their relationship with him.
“If the evidence establishes that the accused is guilty, they must be brought before the law, whether that person is my son or anyone else,” he said.
The MP’s comments came as police continued investigating the case against his son, who has been arrested in connection with the killing.
Court grants three-day remand
Gurudaspur Police Station officer-in-charge Abdul Hannan said Shakil’s father, Robiul Karim, filed a murder case on 19 October. The complaint named eight to 10 unidentified people as accused.
Police have already arrested one person and identified other suspects, the officer said. He declined to disclose further details, citing the ongoing investigation, but expressed hope that the remaining suspects would be arrested soon.
Additional Superintendent of Police in Natore Ifte Khayer Alam said investigators produced Mintu before the Gurudaspur magistrate’s court after formally showing him arrested in the murder case.
The investigating officer sought 10 days of remand for questioning. After hearing the application, the court granted three days.
The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances of the attack, identify the roles of the suspects and determine who was responsible for Shakil’s death. Mintu’s expulsion from Jubo Dal is a separate organisational measure, while the allegations against him remain subject to the judicial process.
