Detectives from the Chattogram District Police have arrested Sabbir Hossain Sani, a key associate and second-in-command of notorious underworld figure “Boro Sajjad”, during a targeted overnight operation in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj. The raid, conducted on Friday night, delivered a major blow to an extensive extortion syndicate operating across Chattogram city and district.
Police officials revealed that Sani, a resident of the Hamjarbagh area under Panchlaish Police Station in Chattogram, originally hails from Satbasu village in Satkhira’s Kaliganj upazila. Having previously lived abroad, Sani returned to Bangladesh last year on the direct instructions of Boro Sajjad to manage local criminal operations. He was placed on a monthly retainer of 50,000 taka by the syndicate chief to oversee field operations and enforce compliance.
Following the arrest and imprisonment of senior gang lieutenants, including ‘Chhotto Sajjad’ and David Imon, Sani stepped into the role of primary operational coordinator. He assumed full responsibility for orchestrating extortion networks and criminal activities previously managed by Imon. Under his direction, syndicate members systematically targeted local business owners and prominent residents, cultivating an atmosphere of fear to extract substantial sums of money.
Investigators highlighted that the gang employed aggressive intimidation tactics to secure payment. When targeted victims refused to comply with extortion demands or failed to pay the specified amounts, Sani instructed local gang members to launch armed attacks on their residences and commercial premises to compel submission.
Sani already faces multiple criminal charges, with two separate cases currently pending against him at Panchlaish and Hathazari police stations in Chattogram. Detective branch officers have secured substantial incriminating evidence, including multiple video clips and a recently recovered audio recording capturing Sani issuing threats and demanding extortion payments.
Confirming the arrest, Chattogram District Additional Superintendent of Police (Media) Md. Russel stated that Sani served as Boro Sajjad’s trusted lieutenant on the ground. He added that forensic verification of the audio recordings and digital evidence is currently underway, with police taking strict legal measures to dismantle the remaining elements of the criminal network.
