A 65-year-old man was killed on Saturday afternoon following a violent clash between two rival village factions over a long-standing land dispute in Shalla upazila of Sunamganj district. The incident took place in Atgaon village, where escalating tensions over property possession culminated in a deadly confrontation.
The deceased has been identified as Abdul Mannan, who belonged to one of the contesting groups. Police officers arrived at the scene shortly after the violence broke out to restore order and diffuse mounting tensions in the area.
According to police and local sources, a dispute over the ownership and physical possession of a piece of land had been brewing for a considerable period between two local figures, Roop Miah and Azab Ali. Tensions reached a breaking point on Saturday afternoon when supporters from both sides gathered at the contested site, leading to a heated verbal altercation regarding right of occupation.
The argument quickly escalated out of control as members of both factions armed themselves with locally made weapons, including bamboo sticks and sharp implements. During the chaotic melee, Abdul Mannan, representing Azab Ali’s side, sustained severe traumatic injuries. Although nearby villagers attempted to render assistance, the elderly man succumbed to his injuries before emergency medical care could be provided.
The fatal clash spread fear throughout Atgaon village, prompting residents to alert local law enforcement. A contingent from Shalla Police Station was deployed immediately to secure the village and prevent further violence between the grieving and retaliatory groups. Officers recovered Abdul Mannan’s body and initiated the necessary steps for a post-mortem examination at the Sunamganj District Sadar Hospital morgue to determine the precise cause of death.
Confirming the incident, the Officer-in-Charge of Shalla Police Station, Md. Sohel, stated that the tragedy stemmed directly from the prolonged land feud. He assured that law enforcement personnel remain stationed at the location to maintain peace. Authorities have launched an investigation to identify those responsible for the violence, with legal proceedings actively underway as the victim’s family prepares to file a formal complaint.
