Just days after edging past Brighton & Hove Albion on penalties in the Carabao Cup, Manchester City suffered a starkly contrasting fate against the same opposition at the Etihad Stadium. An early strike from Yasin Ayari condemned Enzo Maresca’s side to a 1-0 defeat in the English Premier League, marking City’s second consecutive league loss following a recent setback against Aston Villa.
The defeat leaves Manchester City’s position at the summit of the Premier League in severe jeopardy. Although City remain top of the table with 21 points from nine matches, second-placed Arsenal sit level on 21 points having played a game fewer. Should Arsenal secure at least a draw in their upcoming fixture against Liverpool, the Gunners will usurp City at the pinnacle of the league standings.
Brighton initiated proceedings with purpose and intensity, exploiting an early lapse in the Manchester City setup. In the 11th minute, a costly defensive error from midfielder Matheus Nunes allowed Yasin Ayari to seize possession inside the penalty box. The Swedish international made no mistake from close range, slotting the ball past the goalkeeper to give the visitors an early lead.
Stung by the deficit, Manchester City pressed forward in search of an immediate response. Attacks spearheaded by Erling Haaland and Jérémy Doku tested the visiting backline, yet Brighton remained disciplined and resolute in defence. Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen delivered a commanding performance between the posts, pulling off a series of crucial saves to preserve Brighton’s advantage through sustained periods of home pressure.
The second half saw Brighton threaten on the counter-attack, missing opportunities to double their lead and put the contest beyond reach. As time ticked away, City launched a desperate late onslaught. In the 90th minute, young midfielder Nico O’Reilly met a cross inside the box, only to see his header steer agonisingly wide of the target. Brighton held firm through stoppage time to seal a memorable victory, leaving the hosts to contend with growing domestic frustration.
