Elderly Passenger Killed as Freight Truck Hits Easybike in Joypurhat

A 60-year-old man was killed on the spot and two others were critically injured, including an easybike driver whose right leg was severed, after a loaded freight truck rammed into an electric three-wheeler in Kalai upazila, Joypurhat, on Saturday evening. The devastating highway crash occurred at approximately 6:30 pm in front of the Punat Cold Storage along the Joypurhat-Bogra highway.

The deceased passenger has been identified as Nurnabi, a resident of Aflapara village in Punat union, Kalai, and the son of the late Nayeb Ali. The easybike driver, Enamul Haq (60), who suffered the traumatic amputation of his right leg, is the son of the late Mofiz Uddin from the same village. The third victim, Sohrab Ali (55), who remains in a precarious condition, is the son of Md. Yousuf Ali, also hailing from Aflapara.

According to eyewitnesses and local residents, Nurnabi and Sohrab Ali were returning home from work in Enamul Haq’s easybike. They were travelling along the highway from Kalai town towards Punat when a heavy freight truck coming from the opposite direction attempted an overtaking manoeuvre and struck the rear of the battery-powered vehicle. The violent impact caused the easybike to lose control, violently ejecting the driver and both passengers onto the tarmac. Nurnabi was thrown directly under the truck’s rear wheels and was crushed to death instantly, while Enamul’s leg was severed in the impact and Sohrab sustained extensive traumatic injuries.

Hearing the loud collision, nearby residents and cold storage workers rushed to the scene to rescue the victims. The two surviving men were initially transported to the Kalai Upazila Health Complex. Recognising the severity of their injuries, attending medical staff provided emergency stabilisation before referring both patients to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogra for urgent advanced surgical care.

Following the impact, the truck driver lost control, causing the heavy vehicle to plunge into a roadside ditch. The driver and his assistant managed to flee the scene on foot immediately after the vehicle came to a halt. Officers from Kalai Police Station arrived shortly afterwards to secure the crash site and recover Nurnabi’s body.

Confirming the casualties, the Officer-in-Charge of Kalai Police Station, Saidul Alam, stated that the truck remains stranded in the ditch while efforts to identify and trace the absconding driver and assistant are currently underway. He added that because the victim’s family requested no formal autopsy or police investigation, Nurnabi’s body was handed over to his relatives for final rites.
