A 15-year-old workman has died after being severely assaulted and stabbed with a pair of scissors during a dispute over sharing a gas stove at a bachelor flat in Rayerbazar, Dhaka. The victim, Nirob Hossain, succumbed to his injuries at approximately 5:30 pm on Saturday whilst undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Nirob, who worked as a mechanic and resided in a communal mess on Green Goli in Rayerbazar, hailed from Ramnagar village in Ramganj upazila, Lakshmipur. The youngest of four siblings, including three brothers and a sister, he lived in the capital to earn a living alongside his family. His father, Enayet Hossain Munshi, works as a painter.
Detailing the sequence of events, the victim’s elder brother, Piyal Hossain, stated that the confrontation erupted on the evening of 19 October at around 8:30 pm. Nirob was cooking rice on the shared gas stove when Alamgir (28), a painter residing in the same lodging, entered the kitchen to prepare a meal. A sharp argument ensued when Nirob indicated that he intended to boil eggs immediately after his rice was finished, leading to a clash over stove access. Attempting to avoid further friction, Nirob left the kitchen and returned to his room.
The situation escalated shortly afterwards. As Nirob and Piyal lay resting on their bed, Alamgir, his younger brother Shimul, and their nephews Najim and Fahim barged into the room and attacked Nirob. During the altercation, Shimul struck Nirob twice in the neck with a pair of scissors. Piyal was also assaulted when he attempted to intervene and protect his younger brother.
Bleeding heavily, Nirob was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for primary care before being admitted to the ICU of a private hospital in Shyamoli later that night. As his health deteriorated, he was transferred back to the DMCH intensive care unit on 22 October, where he remained under critical care until his death on Saturday evening.
Following the assault, an attempted murder case was registered against four individuals at Mohammadpur Police Station. Piyal noted that although police initially detained Alamgir, he was subsequently released on bail. Confirming the update, Mohammadpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Jahidul Islam Kabir stated that Nirob’s body has been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy. Law enforcement confirmed that the attempted murder case will now be converted into a formal murder charge, with police operations currently underway to arrest all accused individuals.
