A teacher at a residential Hafezia madrasa in Chauddagram, Comilla, has been arrested on charges of repeatedly abusing two minor students. Police detained the accused, identified as Mohammad Kabir Hossain, from the educational institution on Sunday evening following widespread protests by local residents and guardians. He was formally placed under arrest on Monday.
Hossain, a resident of Barura upazila within the same district, had joined the madrasa as a residential teacher just a month prior. According to police and family sources, he targeted two residential students of the Hifz department, aged 10 and 11. The instructor allegedly subjected the children to repeated sexual abuse over several days, coercing their silence through threats and intimidation.
The ordeal came to light after the abuse intensified over recent days, prompting the traumatised victims to inform their family members. As news of the incidents spread throughout the neighbourhood, intense anger mounted among parents, guardians, and local residents. On Sunday afternoon, an aggrieved crowd gathered at the madrasa premises, demanding exemplary punishment for the accused and immediate justice for the victims. Responding to the escalation, a team from Chauddagram Police Station arrived at the venue and took Hossain into custody late that evening.
Both victims come from families where the fathers work abroad as expatriates. In their absence, legal proceedings were initiated by the victims’ immediate relatives; the uncle of one child and the grandfather of the other filed two separate cases at Chauddagram Police Station under the relevant child protection and anti-repression laws.
Confirming the arrest, Officer-in-Charge of Chauddagram Police Station, Mohammad Arif Hossain, stated that law enforcement acted promptly upon receiving the allegations. Primary police investigations and initial interrogations confirmed the substance of the claims, with the accused confessing to the acts during preliminary questioning. The police officer added that the suspect is being produced before the court, whilst medical examinations and support services for the two young victims are underway to ensure a thorough investigation.
