Jamaat Leader Injured in Bomb Blast After Retrieval of Package

A local political figure has been hospitalized in southwestern Bangladesh following a targeted booby-trap explosion at his residence on Tuesday morning.

MM Monirul Islam, 63, president of the 7th ward unit of Jamaat-e-Islami in Senhati under Dighalia Upazila, Khulna, sustained injuries when a suspicious item placed outside his front door detonated upon being brought indoors.

According to police and community accounts, the incident unfolded shortly before 6:00 am. Mr Islam was returning home after attending the early morning Fajr prayers at a local mosque when he noticed a polythene carrier bag sitting on his doorstep. The package appeared to contain puffed rice (known locally as muri). Assuming a neighbor or passer-by had accidentally dropped the food item, he picked up the bag and brought it into his residence.

The device detonated the moment he set the packet down on the floor of his living room. The force of the blast triggered a localized fire that quickly consumed surrounding furniture and household items, inflicting injuries on the Jamaat leader.

Alerted by the loud explosion, local residents rushed to the scene to extinguish the flames and rescue Mr Islam. He was swiftly transported to the Dighalia Upazila Health Complex, where medical personnel administered emergency treatment for his injuries.

Officers from the Dighalia Police Station arrived promptly at the site to secure the area and collect forensic evidence. Speaking to reporters, Arup Kumar Chowdhury, Officer-in-Charge of Dighalia Police Station, confirmed that senior police authorities had been alerted and an official investigation was underway. Police suspect the act was perpetrated by miscreants intending to incite panic and local instability. Legal proceedings and formal filings regarding the attack are currently being prepared.

The incident highlights ongoing security challenges surrounding local political organizers in the region, with law enforcement personnel maintaining a heightened presence in Senhati while forensic analysis of the explosive residue continues.
