Tragic Dowry Murder in Shariatpur: Woman Slain by Husband

A brutal domestic tragedy has sent shockwaves through the quiet rural community of Damudya, situated within the Shariatpur district of Bangladesh. A young woman was allegedly murdered by her husband on Monday evening following an escalation in long-standing demands for illicit dowry money.

The victim, identified as Lamia, was the daughter of Al-Amin Matbor, a resident of a neighboring village in the region. According to local law enforcement and grieving relatives, the fatal assault occurred at approximately 8:00 pm on 2 November in Ward No. 1 of Koneshwar Union, an area situated along the Shariatpur-Damudya regional highway.

Investigators reveal that the prime suspect, Rabiul Chhayal, son of Azgar Chhayal, lured his wife towards a secluded ditch near an adjacent homestead. Following a heated alterkation, Rabiul allegedly attacked Lamia with a sharp weapon, slitting her throat and severing the tendons in both of her wrists. He subsequently abandoned her lifeless body by the edge of the ditch and fled the scene.

Family members disclosed that the couple had married six years ago after a romantic relationship. However, the union was quickly marred by persistent domestic violence, predominantly fuelled by ongoing monetary demands from Rabiul and his relatives. Relatives recounted that despite earlier interventions—including a financial payment of 20,000 Bangladeshi Taka provided by Lamia’s elder sister—the physical abuse and coercion continued unabated.

Prior to the incident, renewed financial demands had prompted Lamia to seek refuge at her paternal home. Community leaders subsequently convened a traditional local arbitration board (shalish) to mediate the conflict and facilitate a resolution. Tragically, shortly after the arbitrators concluded the proceedings and dispersed, a fresh argument erupted between the couple, culminating in the horrific assault.

Officers from the local police station responded swiftly to the report. Damudya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jahangir Alam confirmed that law enforcement personnel recovered the body from the site and dispatched it to the Shariatpur District Hospital morgue for a full post-mortem examination.

Police forces successfully tracked down and detained Rabiul Chhayal shortly after the incident. OC Jahangir Alam stated that formal legal proceedings are currently underway, and a murder case is being lodged against the suspect.

Despite legislative prohibitions under the Dowry Prohibition Act in Bangladesh, illegal dowry demands remain a pervasive socio-cultural catalyst for domestic abuse and violent crimes against women across rural communities. Human rights advocates continue to call for stringent enforcement of existing laws to deter such fatal domestic violence.
