The incident took place at around 3.30pm on Wednesday, 4 November, at Haji Tower, situated approximately 50 metres from Muladi Police Station.
The deceased was identified as Siam, the son of Taslim Howlader, from Khalashirchar village in Muladi Sadar Union.
According to CCTV footage obtained from the building, Siam entered Haji Tower by climbing the stairs at around 3.30pm. He then remained on the rooftop for approximately 10 minutes before jumping from the building at 3.42pm.
After the incident, police officers and local residents rushed to rescue him. He was taken to Muladi Upazila Health Complex, where the duty doctor declared him dead on arrival.
Siam’s father, Taslim Howlader, said his son had left home around midday, telling family members that he had some work to attend to in Muladi. However, he said the family had no clear understanding of what had prompted the incident.
Omar Faruk, the owner of Haji Tower, said the CCTV footage clearly showed Siam climbing to the rooftop and jumping from the building. However, he expressed uncertainty about why the young man had chosen that particular building.
Muladi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) KM Sohel Rana said the CCTV footage indicated that Siam had jumped deliberately. According to the preliminary findings of the investigation, the young man had reportedly been experiencing mental health difficulties.
The OC also said the footage showed Siam making several attempts to jump from the rooftop before stepping back each time. Eventually, he jumped from the building, sustaining fatal injuries.
Police are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Although the initial findings suggest that Siam jumped voluntarily, investigators are expected to follow the necessary legal procedures to establish the circumstances of his death.
The OC said the body was being kept at the hospital and was scheduled to be sent to the mortuary of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal on Thursday morning for a post-mortem examination.
Police were also preparing to file an unnatural death case in connection with the incident.
The post-mortem examination is expected to form part of the official investigation into the death. Siam’s family members remain uncertain about what led to the tragedy, while police continue their preliminary inquiries.
