Two motorcyclists lost their lives on Thursday morning after being struck by a speeding covered van in the Jasimuddin Road area of Uttara, Dhaka. The victims have been identified as Arifur Rahman, aged 40, and Falu Mia, aged 55.
The collision occurred around 10:15 am along a busy stretch of Jasimuddin Road. According to eyewitnesses and family members, Arifur Rahman and Falu Mia were traveling together on a motorcycle when a fast-approaching covered van hit their vehicle from behind. The impact violently threw both riders onto the tarmac.
Falu Mia succumbed to severe head injuries instantly at the scene. Arifur Rahman, who worked at an old iron dealership in the Postogola area, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a local hospital by his cousin, Monir. As his physical condition deteriorated rapidly, medical staff recommended an immediate transfer to a specialized facility. He was brought to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around noon, where the attending doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Inspector Habibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the DMCH Police Camp, confirmed the double casualty following verification from emergency medical personnel. Both bodies have been transferred to the DMCH morgue for post-mortem examinations to determine the precise cause of death.
Law enforcement authorities acted swiftly in the aftermath of the crash. Police officers from the Airport Police Station seized the covered van involved in the incident and detained its driver. The suspect and vehicle remain in police custody while investigators complete their preliminary report and initiate formal legal proceedings.
Traffic fatalities involving heavy commercial vehicles and two-wheelers remain a major safety challenge across the capital’s primary thoroughfares. Commuters frequently face significant risks along high-speed corridors like Uttara, where heavy delivery vans and long-haul lorries share lanes with lighter passenger traffic. Local precinct officers have notified the relevant administrative bodies, and further inquiries into the driver’s speed and potential negligence are currently underway.
