The incident took place on Friday evening in the Tantibari area of Ghatmajhi Union, under Madaripur Sadar Upazila. The injured youth, identified as Habib Munshi, is the son of the late Razzab Munshi and a resident of Jikrahati village in Ward No. 3 of the same union.
According to the victim and local sources, a cocktail explosion occurred in the area a few days ago. Habib had recorded the incident on his mobile phone. The footage was subsequently shared with journalists and broadcast by various media outlets, bringing the explosion to public attention.
The publication of the video allegedly angered several local individuals, including Siam Khan and Didar Khan, along with their associates. They reportedly held Habib responsible for recording the incident and allowing the footage to reach the media.
In what is believed to have been a consequence of that resentment, the accused allegedly gathered together and launched a sudden attack on Habib on Friday evening. They reportedly punched and kicked him repeatedly before beating him with sticks, leaving him bleeding and seriously injured.
Local residents later rescued Habib from the scene and rushed him to the emergency department of Madaripur 250-bed District Hospital. He is currently receiving medical treatment there.
The alleged assault has raised concerns among local residents, particularly because the incident is believed to be linked to the recording and publication of footage documenting a public security incident. The case also highlights concerns about the safety of individuals who document incidents and share information with journalists.
Recording and reporting incidents of public interest can help bring events to the attention of the authorities and the wider community. However, allegations of physical attacks against individuals over such activities raise questions about personal safety and the freedom to share information.
Meanwhile, Madaripur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Kalam Azad said that no formal complaint had been lodged in connection with the incident.
He added that the police would take the necessary legal action if a complaint was submitted.
As no formal complaint has yet been filed, the police have not announced any investigation findings or further action against those accused. The allegations against Siam Khan, Didar Khan and their associates have also yet to be independently established.
