Young Motorcyclist Killed in Shitalakkhya Bridge Crash

A 22-year-old man was killed and his friend injured after their motorcycle crashed into a railing on the Third Shitalakkhya Bridge in Bandar, Narayanganj, on Friday night.

The deceased was identified as Yunus Rashid Nijhum, son of Masud Mia, from the Mollabari area of Nabiganj in Bandar. His friend, Farhan, 19, sustained injuries in the accident.

The crash occurred on Friday (6 November) on the lane heading towards Madanagar. According to police, the motorcycle was travelling at high speed when its rider lost control and struck the bridge railing.

The impact was severe. The motorcycle was thrown approximately 30 metres from the point of collision, leaving Nijhum critically injured. He died at the scene, while Farhan was injured.

Sub-Inspector Milon Barman of the Madanagar Police Outpost said the motorcycle had lost control before crashing into the railing. Police subsequently recovered Nijhum’s body and sent it to Bandar Upazila Health Complex for necessary procedures. Farhan was taken to Narayanganj General Hospital, commonly known as Victoria Hospital, for medical treatment.

Family members said Nijhum was an honours student and had been preparing for a major change in his life. He was expected to travel to Japan next February and had already started learning Japanese in preparation for the journey.

His planned trip represented an important opportunity for his future, making his sudden death particularly devastating for his family. What should have been a period of preparation and anticipation has instead become a time of grief for those close to him.

The accident has once again drawn attention to the risks associated with high-speed motorcycle riding. Losing control at speed can have devastating consequences, particularly on bridges and other elevated road sections where collisions with roadside barriers can cause serious injuries.

Observing speed limits, maintaining control of vehicles and wearing appropriate protective equipment, particularly helmets, are essential safety measures for motorcyclists and their passengers.

Nijhum’s death has brought an abrupt end to the aspirations of a young student who had been looking forward to travelling abroad. His friend Farhan is receiving medical attention following the crash.
