Messi Makes MLS History With Back-to-Back Golden Boots

Lionel Messi has added another remarkable achievement to his illustrious career, becoming the first player in Major League Soccer (MLS) history to win the Golden Boot in consecutive seasons. The Inter Miami captain secured the honour after scoring 26 goals in 31 appearances during the 2026 campaign, further underlining his influence on American football.

The Argentina international, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and 2022 World Cup champion, previously claimed the MLS Golden Boot in 2025. He scored 29 goals in 28 matches that season, establishing himself as one of the league’s most prolific forwards. Although five players had previously won the award more than once, none had managed to secure it in successive seasons.

Messi maintained his scoring consistency throughout the 2026 campaign, finishing comfortably ahead of his closest challengers. FC Dallas forward Petar Musa came second with 22 goals, while Nashville’s Sam Surridge finished third with 21. Messi’s four-goal advantage over Musa reflected the Argentine’s continued ability to make a decisive impact in front of goal.

His contribution, however, extended well beyond scoring. Messi registered 17 assists during the season, taking his combined tally of goals and assists to 43. No other player in the league contributed directly to as many goals during the campaign. He had also topped the MLS assists chart in 2025, recording 19 assists.

Inter Miami concluded their regular-season campaign with a 3-3 draw against Charlotte FC on Sunday, 8 November. Despite establishing a commanding 3-0 lead in the first half, Miami were unable to maintain their advantage as Charlotte fought back to earn a point.

Messi did not find the net in the match, but he played a significant role in creating Miami’s first two scoring opportunities through his corner kicks. Although the result denied the club a victory in their final regular-season fixture, it did not affect their position in the Eastern Conference standings.

Miami finished second in the conference with 60 points, securing home advantage for the opening round of the upcoming play-offs. They are scheduled to face seventh-placed Columbus Crew in a best-of-three first-round series. Playing at home provides Miami with an important advantage as they begin their pursuit of the MLS Cup.

Attention will now turn to another potential milestone for Messi: a third consecutive MLS Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. He won the league’s top individual honour in both 2024 and 2025, becoming the first player to claim the distinction in successive seasons. His outstanding performances throughout 2026 have once again placed him among the leading contenders.

Should Messi win the MVP award for a third consecutive year, he would become the first player in MLS history to achieve that feat. Such an accomplishment would add another significant chapter to a career already defined by extraordinary individual honours and team success.

At this stage of his career, Messi continues to demonstrate that his influence extends far beyond his goalscoring record. His ability to create chances, dictate attacking play and deliver decisive contributions has made him central to Inter Miami’s ambitions. With the Golden Boot secured and another individual accolade within reach, the Argentine now has the opportunity to turn his remarkable regular-season performances into further success in the play-offs.
