West Indies Surge Ahead as Test Victory Slips Beyond Bangladesh

Bangladesh face a daunting task in their ongoing Test match against the West Indies after failing to restrain the visitors during the critical two sessions of the fourth day. By the tea break, the Caribbean side had built a commanding 229-run lead, having reached 259 for the loss of just two wickets in their second innings. The aggressive, One-Day International-style run rate adopted by the West Indies batters effectively pushed the match out of the host nation’s grasp.

The morning session offered Bangladesh a brief glimmer of hope when the bowlers managed to claim two early wickets. However, the momentum vanished completely during the second session. Opening bowlers Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud failed to extract movement or cause trouble with the new ball during the opening hour of Day 4. The West Indian top order capitalised on the benign conditions, building a firm foundation that put the match firmly in their control.

Statistical history highlights the overwhelming nature of the challenge now facing Bangladesh. The national team’s record in fourth-innings run chases is remarkably poor, with their highest successful pursuit standing at 217 runs against the West Indies in Grenada back in 2009. Outside of that solitary victory 17 years ago, Bangladesh have never successfully chased a target of 200 or more in Test cricket.

With the Caribbean side already holding a lead well past the 200-run threshold and eight second-innings wickets still intact, the task awaiting Bangladesh’s batters appears monumental. Unless the bowling attack can inflict a rapid collapse immediately after the tea interval, the hosts will be left trying to survive a formidable fourth-innings chase on a degrading pitch.
