A local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s volunteer wing, the Swechhasebak Dal, has been apprehended by residents and handed over to the police after allegedly recording non-consensual footage of women in a residential quarter of Barishal.
The incident occurred late on Saturday night in the vicinity of the Upazila Parishad complex in Wazirpur town. Local residents caught the suspect red-handed whilst he was reportedly filming through the window of a private residence.
The individual, identified as Bayzid Hossain Mithu, serves as the joint convener of the Wazirpur Municipal Swechhasebak Dal.
Confirming the arrest on Sunday afternoon, Wazirpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Rakibul Islam stated that law enforcement officers intervened after receiving urgent reports from members of the public who had detained the suspect.
According to reports from neighbours, Mithu had drawn suspicion over several months for surreptitiously capturing intimate video footage of women through open windows and bathroom ventilators during the late-night hours. Victims and local residents alleged that he subsequently used these illicit recordings to blackmail women and coerce them into inappropriate demands.
The tension escalated on Saturday evening when neighbourhood watchfulness caught Mithu mid-act outside a complex near the local government headquarters. Outraged by the breach of privacy, an angry mob assembled at the scene and subjected him to a severe physical beating before police personnel arrived to diffuse the situation and take him into custody.
Following his detention, police seized the suspect’s mobile phone for forensic verification. Initial technical examinations revealed at least five explicit and compromised video recordings stored within the device’s storage memory. Investigators are currently assessing the contents of the recovered media to identify potential victims and trace any further dissemination of the material.
The Bangladesh Police have reiterated their commitment to pursuing strict legal action should the ongoing investigation formally confirm the extortion and privacy violations.
Covert filming, harassment, and digital blackmail remain significant legal offenses under the Bangladeshi penal code and digital security framework, carrying substantial prison sentences. Local political entities have faced mounting public pressure to address misconduct within their grassroots leadership as community members demand justice for the victims.
Wazirpur Model Police Station authorities confirmed that formal charges are currently being prepared, and the suspect remains in judicial custody pending further interrogation and evidence assembly.
