On Friday, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk issued a strong rebuke of Israel’s proposed full military takeover of the occupied Gaza Strip, calling for an immediate halt to the plan.

“The Israeli Government’s plan for a complete military takeover of the occupied Gaza Strip must be immediately halted,”
said Türk in an official statement from his office in Geneva.

The UN rights chief emphasised that such action would violate international legal obligations and run counter to global diplomatic efforts for a peaceful resolution.

Objections Raised by the UN:

UN Concern Explanation
Violation of ICJ Ruling The plan contradicts the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) directive to end occupation promptly.
Obstruction to Two-State Solution The move undermines ongoing efforts toward a negotiated two-State solution.
Breach of Palestinians’ Right to Self-Determination It infringes upon the inalienable right of Palestinians to govern their own territory.

Türk noted that the proposal by the Israeli government stands in stark opposition to the international consensus that favours diplomatic solutions grounded in law, equity, and human rights.

“This course of action contradicts the very principles upon which sustainable peace is built,”
the commissioner remarked.

Broader Context:

Legal & Diplomatic Framework Current Implications
International Court of Justice (ICJ) Ordered Israel to take steps toward ending its occupation of Palestinian territories.
UN Position Reiterates support for a two-State solution and self-determination of Palestinians.
Global Human Rights Norms Warn against forced military control and territorial occupation.

The UN’s urgent call adds to growing international condemnation of Israeli actions in Gaza, following widespread concerns about civilian casualties, humanitarian suffering, and the undermining of peace negotiations.

The situation remains critical as pressure mounts on Israel to comply with international rulings and prioritise diplomacy over military dominance.
