Marnus Labuschagne, the Australian Test cricket star recently dropped from the team, has expressed determination to bounce back and silence his critics. He has put his hand up to open the batting in the forthcoming Ashes series against England.
The 31-year-old, a long-standing number three batsman, was omitted from Australia’s Test tour of the West Indies in June and July after enduring a prolonged lean patch.
In his first public comments since the decision, Labuschagne told The Australian newspaper on Sunday that the setback might have been a blessing in disguise.

“It was tough because you never want to be dropped,” Labuschagne admitted.
“But almost as soon as their [selectors’] words came out, my mind shifted straight away to, ‘Okay, how am I playing the Ashes … how do I make that happen?’”
He added, “This has given me an opportunity to reflect and not having the pressure of the media saying, ‘Marnus has got to go’.”
Labuschagne said he thrives on “proving the doubters wrong and being able to find a way.” Missing the West Indies Tests gave him the chance to “sit back and think, ‘This is where I want to be and this is how I’m going to get there’.”

| Current Number Three | Cameron Green |
Having been shifted from his usual number three spot to open in the World Test Championship final loss to South Africa, Labuschagne scored 17 and 22 before being dropped.
With his replacement, the teenager Sam Konstas, struggling at the top of the order, Labuschagne expressed his readiness to give opening another try.
“I would be happy to do that — I would love to,” he said, acknowledging that Cameron Green has ably filled the number three position in the West Indies.
“If opener is where I need to bat to be playing in the Test team, that’s fine.”
He reflected, “If you had asked me where I prefer to bat, obviously I have batted at three my whole career, but at this stage you don’t get a choice.”
Looking Ahead
Labuschagne is set to return to action for Australia in three home one-day internationals against South Africa this month.
Following that, he will focus on the Sheffield Shield competition, aiming to impress selectors sufficiently to earn a recall for the five-Test Ashes series, which is scheduled to begin in Perth on 21 November.
