Lawyers staged a protest march demanding the death penalty for former Chief Justice A B M Khairul Haque.
The demonstration, led by BNP-affiliated lawyers, took place around 1:30 pm on Tuesday (12 August).
Background of the Incident
The protest follows a contentious hearing on Monday (11 August) in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area concerning the bail and dismissal petitions filed by former Chief Justice A B M Khairul Haque in connection with the murder case of Jubo Dal activist Abdul Kaiyum Ahad.
Chaos in the High Court
The uproar occurred in the High Court bench’s courtroom, presided over by Justices Md. Zakir Hossain and K M Rasheduzzaman Raja, on Monday afternoon.
During the disturbance, lawyers representing the prosecution accused the defence counsel of attempting to undermine the judiciary and accused them of displaying insincere remorse. The prosecution lawyers reminded the defence of their silence when former Chief Justice S K Sinha was expelled from the country, questioning their whereabouts at that time
Court Decision
Subsequently, the court accepted the prosecution’s application and scheduled the next hearing of the case for 17 August.
The protest and courtroom chaos underscore the heightened tensions surrounding the case against the former Chief Justice, drawing considerable public and legal attention.
