Gaza Militants Fire Rockets at Israel

The Israeli army reported that two projectiles were launched from the Gaza Strip on Sunday. The Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the rocket fire, which caused no casualties or damage.

According to a military statement:

  • Two projectiles were identified crossing from central Gaza into Israeli territory.
  • Air raid sirens sounded in Netivot, a town approximately 10 kilometres (six miles) from Gaza.
  • One projectile was intercepted, while the other landed in an open area.

Islamic Jihad’s armed wing, which has previously fought alongside Hamas against Israeli forces, stated that the rockets were fired “in response to the crimes committed by the Zionist enemy against our people.”

It marked the first time in several months that rocket fire from Gaza directly threatened Netivot, a town with a population of around 50,000 residents.

The rocket launches occurred amid intensified Israeli military operations around Gaza City, the territory’s largest urban centre. The Israeli army has stated its objective is to capture Gaza City, defeat Hamas, and secure the release of hostages taken during Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack.

Recent Israeli actions include:

Date Action Details
Saturday Airstrike Flattened a high-rise in Gaza City (second in two days)
Saturday Leaflet Drop Thousands of leaflets dropped on western neighbourhoods urging residents to evacuate

Witnesses and an AFP journalist reported that these operations have created heightened tension and uncertainty for residents in targeted areas.

The rocket fire highlights the ongoing escalation between Gaza militants and Israeli forces. While this particular incident caused no physical damage, it underscores the persistent security threats facing communities near Gaza and the broader regional instability.

The situation remains fluid, with potential for further escalations as Israeli ground and aerial operations continue.
