Dhanush: “I Sold Flowers to Afford Idlis”

South Indian actor Dhanush has revealed the title of his upcoming film, Idli Kadai (meaning Idli Shop). While announcing the film, he shared a deeply personal childhood memory, explaining why the humble idli holds such significance in his life.

Dhanush confessed that idli has always been his favourite food, yet during his childhood, his family could not afford it regularly.

He recalled: “When I was young, I always craved idlis, but we could not afford to buy them. So, we would collect flowers from the neighbourhood and sell them for money. My sister, cousins, and I would wake up at 4 a.m. to do this, and it took about two hours.”

The actor emphasised the unmatched satisfaction of those moments: “The joy of eating idlis with money earned through hard work is incomparable. The happiness and taste we experienced as children cannot be found in any restaurant today.”

It was these nostalgic memories that inspired him to name his new film Idli Kadai.

Despite his touching revelation, many social media users expressed doubt about Dhanush’s story.

  • One user commented: “He says he was poor as a child, yet as the son of a state-level director, did he never give money to his family? Is that true?”
  • Another sceptical remark read: “Dhanush is the son of a director. Claiming he had no money is false.”
