Police Officer Injured in Knife Attack During Magura Drug Raid

A police assistant sub-inspector was injured in a knife attack while attempting to detain a man suspected of involvement in the drug trade during an anti-drug operation in Shalikha, Magura. Police have detained a man identified as Apu in connection with the incident and are continuing efforts to locate other suspects who reportedly fled the scene.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night, 13 October, near Alek’s brick kiln in the Harishpur area of Shatakhali Union, within Shalikha Upazila. The injured officer has been identified as Rakibul Islam, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) serving with the police.
According to police sources, a team from Shalikha Police Station was conducting an operation in Harishpur as part of efforts to combat drug-related activities. During the operation, officers attempted to apprehend Apu on suspicion of involvement in the drug trade.
Police said that when ASI Rakibul Islam grabbed hold of the suspect in an attempt to detain him, a struggle broke out. During the confrontation, Apu allegedly attacked the officer with a knife, leaving him injured.
Local residents subsequently intervened and caught the suspect. They reportedly beat him before handing him over to the police. The circumstances surrounding the confrontation and the alleged assault are expected to be examined as part of the investigation.
Rakibul Islam was rescued from the scene and taken to Shalikha Upazila Health Complex for treatment. Details of the severity of his injuries and his condition following admission were not immediately available.
Khairul Hasan, Additional Superintendent of Police in Magura, confirmed the incident. He said a police officer had sustained knife injuries while carrying out an anti-drug operation and that a man named Apu had been detained in connection with the case.
The police official also said efforts were continuing to apprehend other suspected drug traders who fled the area. Further details about their identities and alleged involvement had not been disclosed at the time of reporting.
The incident highlights the risks law enforcement officers can face when carrying out arrests during operations targeting suspected criminal activities. Such encounters can escalate rapidly when a suspect resists detention, potentially endangering officers and people nearby.
The case also raises questions about public safety during confrontations involving suspected offenders. Although local residents reportedly helped apprehend the suspect, the use of physical violence by members of the public can create additional risks and complicate efforts to establish the facts surrounding an incident.
Apu remains subject to the legal process, and the allegations against him will need to be established through the appropriate procedures. Police have not provided further details about the specific legal action planned against him. Their investigation and efforts to locate the other suspects remain ongoing.
