A local leader of the banned organisation Jubo League has been killed following a fatal stabbing incident in Goalanda upazila of Rajbari district. The violent attack took place on Saturday morning, sending shockwaves through the local community.
The victim has been identified as 40-year-old Shariful Islam Hira. Originally hailing from Bahadurpur village under Ujanchar union of Goalanda upazila, he resided with his wife’s family in Ward No. 7 of Goalanda municipality. Alongside his political affiliation as the publicity secretary for the Goalanda municipal unit of the Jubo League, he earned his living working as a line manager at a local easy-bike stand.
According to police sources and grieving relatives, the incident unfolded around 9:15 AM near the Torai intersection close to the Goalanda railway station area. Shariful had reportedly spent the early morning purchasing daily essentials at the local market and was on his way back home when tragedy struck.
Investigators revealed that Shariful shared a long-standing friendship with a man named Kamrul, a resident of Kumrakandi village within the Goalanda municipal area. However, recent weeks had seen mounting tension between the two friends, primarily driven by unresolved financial disputes and monetary transactions.
As Shariful reached the Torai intersection area during his commute home, Kamrul reportedly ambushed him unexpectedly. Armed with a sharp knife, the assailant inflicted multiple stab wounds, leaving the victim critically injured on the street. Hearing his cries for help, local residents rushed to the scene, rescued the bleeding man, and rushed him to the Goalanda Upazila Health Complex. Despite their prompt efforts, the duty doctor on emergency service pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Law enforcement agencies moved quickly to secure the area following the outbreak of violence. Additional Superintendent of Police for the Rajbari Sadar Circle, Shahihedul Islam, confirmed the fatality. He stated that preliminary findings point towards a personal monetary dispute as the core motive behind the killing. The body has since been transferred to a hospital morgue for a comprehensive post-mortem examination, while police teams continue their pursuit to apprehend the perpetrator.
