A New Bangladesh Awaits After End of Sheikh Hasina’s Autocratic Rule – Fakhrul

DHAKA, Feb 22, 2025 (BSS) – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today voiced optimism for a transformed Bangladesh following the collapse of what he described as the fascist autocratic regime of Sheikh Hasina.

“We are filled with hope as the fall of fascism has altered the political landscape. A new Bangladesh is on the horizon, and we must remain determined to create a livable and prosperous nation for future generations,” Fakhrul stated during a discussion held to honor the late journalist Mahfuz Ullah with the posthumous Ekushey Padak award this year.

The event, which took place at the Jatiya Press Club, also saw the attendance of Ekushey Padak-winning photojournalist Shahidul Alam and artist Rokeya Sultana.

Fakhrul emphasized that the downfall of the autocratic government was a result of collective efforts from the people, particularly students, along with the prolonged struggles of political parties. “We owe this change to the persistence of our people, who have fought for democracy and justice,” he said.

Reflecting on the contributions of Mahfuz Ullah, Fakhrul highlighted the late journalist’s pivotal role in uniting both right- and left-wing political forces against the ruling Awami League after the controversial 2014 elections. Fakhrul credited Ullah, along with Mahbub Ullah and Zafar Ullah, for their tireless work to foster political unity, which played a crucial part in challenging the regime.

“Mahfuz Ullah was a steadfast believer in democracy, constantly working to uphold its values,” Fakhrul remarked. “I thank the interim government for posthumously recognizing Mahfuz Ullah with the Ekushey Padak, albeit belatedly.”

In his tribute to the late journalist, Fakhrul expressed deep respect for Mahfuz Ullah’s progressive and patriotic spirit. “He never shied away from speaking the truth, even when it meant challenging powerful figures,” Fakhrul recalled. “His ability to articulate his views was unmatched, leaving no room for his opponents to counter his position.”

With a poignant tone, Fakhrul added, “I miss Mahfuz Ullah deeply. His passing has left a void we cannot fill.”

The event was presided over by Professor Mahbub Ullah, the elder brother of Mahfuz Ullah, with Sabab Raihan Kabir moderating the discussion.

Also speaking at the event were BNP National Standing Committee members Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council members Ismail Zabihullah and Nazmul Haque Nannu, political scientist Professor Dilara Chowdhury, Dhaka University Professor Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Shafiqul Alam, Managing Director and Chief Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Mahbub Morshed, Press Minister at Bangladesh Mission in Washington Golam Mortuza, senior journalists Amirul Islam Kagoji and Dr. Bazlul Ghani Bhuiyan, and Mahfuz Ullah’s son Mustafa Habib.
