Aespa and Anderson .Paak Unite for ‘Keychain’

In a monumental fusion of Western R&B and Eastern pop, the nine-time Grammy Award-winning artist and producer Anderson .Paak has teamed up with the SM Entertainment juggernaut aespa. Their new collaborative single, “Keychain,” is set to be the flagship track for the soundtrack of .Paak’s feature directorial debut, K-POPS!.

The announcement, which arrived via Instagram on Monday, 23 February, showcased a vibrant cover art featuring a plush purple bag adorned with charms representing both artists. This cross-cultural anthem is scheduled for a global release on 27 February at midnight ET, coinciding with the film’s theatrical debut.

A Cinematic and Musical Milestone

K-POPS! represents a deeply personal project for .Paak. Conceived during the COVID-19 lockdowns, the film’s narrative was inspired by skits created with his son. The story eventually evolved into a poignant exploration of Black and Korean cultural duality, drawing heavily on the structural and musical parallels between 90s R&B, gospel, and the modern K-pop phenomenon.

To ensure the soundtrack retained an authentic K-pop edge while maintaining his signature groove, .Paak enlisted the expertise of legendary producer Dem Jointz. A stalwart in the industry, Dem Jointz has a prolific history of crafting hits for SM Entertainment’s roster.

Strengthening Transpacific Ties

While “Keychain” is the first formal collaboration between these two specific acts, Anderson .Paak is a seasoned veteran within the Hallyu wave. He previously lent his soulful vocals to DEAN’s “Put My Hands on You” and collaborated with BTS leader RM on the track “Still Life.” More recently, .Paak’s influence was felt on G-DRAGON’s “Too Bad,” a track he co-produced and featured on.

Interestingly, aespa’s leader, Karina, made a brief but impactful cameo in the “Too Bad” music video, a subtle precursor to this week’s full-group collaboration. The film K-POPS!—which stars .Paak alongside his son, Soul Rasheed, and Yvette Nicole Brown—will also feature cameos from a galaxy of K-pop stars, including Vernon (SEVENTEEN), Jay Park, and Jessi.

This collaboration highlights the ever-blurring lines between global music markets. For aespa, “Keychain” is another strategic step into the Western mainstream, following their successful world tours and English-language releases. For .Paak, it is a testament to his versatility as a storyteller and a bridge-builder between cultures.
