A distribution sales officer for the mobile financial service bKash has been robbed at gunpoint in Bagerhat, with assailants fleeing with £2,000 (300,000 Bangladeshi taka) in cash. The incident occurred on Thursday morning between Boitpur Heremer Mor and Bhadrapara Kheyaghat within the Bemorta Union of Bagerhat Sadar Upazila.
The victim, identified as Sani Jabir Badhon, works for Jabed Enterprise, a local bKash distribution outfit based in the Nagerbazar area. Badhon was traveling by motorcycle around 10:30 am to perform routine business transactions when the ambush took place. According to local reports, six unidentified young men riding three separate motorcycles intercepted Badhon in a relatively deserted stretch of the road at approximately 11:00 am.
Holding the officer at gunpoint, the attackers seized his bag containing 300,000 taka in company funds, alongside his personal mobile phone and 2,000 taka from his pocket. To prevent immediate pursuit, the gang snatched the key to Badhon’s motorcycle and hurled it into a nearby pond before speeding off.
Recounting the ordeal, Badhon noted that three of the six assailants wore helmets, while the remaining three left their faces exposed, though he was unable to identify them. Mohammad Humayun Kabir Kudrati, General Manager of Jabed Enterprise, has since filed a formal written complaint with the Bagerhat Model Police Station.
This daylight robbery highlights a worrying surge in targetted financial crimes across the district. Just two days prior, an agent banking employee named Mohammad Sajjad was abducted shortly after withdrawing 700,000 taka from a Dutch-Bangla Bank branch in the town centre. A group of four to five men posing as Detective Branch (DB) officers forced Sajjad into a white microbus at the Al-Islah junction. The perpetrators assaulted him inside the vehicle, stripped him of the cash, and dumped him alongside the Dhaka-Khulna Highway near Mollahat.
Police have yet to make any arrests or formally identify suspects in either case. Officer-in-Charge of Bagerhat Model Police Station, Mohammad Samsul Arefin, stated that detectives are currently analysing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage gathered from the surrounding areas of the crime scene. He assured the public that law enforcement is working diligently to bring the culprits to justice swiftly.
