Atlético Madrid are attempting to engineer a dual-purpose transfer strategy aimed at strengthening their defensive line while simultaneously securing the long-term future of star striker Julián Álvarez. The Spanish club are actively pursuing Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian ‘Cuti’ Romero, believing his arrival in the Spanish capital will persuade Álvarez to abandon his desire for a move to Barcelona.
Uncertainty surrounding Álvarez’s future at the Metropolitano Stadium deepened after the forward publicly expressed his ambition to pursue a new challenge following Argentina’s World Cup victory over Austria. Reports quickly linked the striker with Barcelona and Real Madrid. Barcelona subsequently submitted a €100 million bid, which Atlético rejected outright. Outraged by the Catalan club’s approach, Atlético lodged a formal complaint with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Although Álvarez remains under contract until June 2030 with a buyout clause set at €500 million, the club hierarchy remains uneasy about his persistent interest in a move to Catalonia.
To resolve the impasse, Spanish newspaper Marca reports that Atlético have turned their attention to Romero, Álvarez’s international teammate and close personal friend. The 26-year-old defender is reportedly ready to depart Tottenham this summer. While Romero originally favoured a move to Arsenal, Tottenham are unwilling to sell their primary central defender to a direct Premier League rival. According to ESPN, this stance has opened the door for Atlético, who are confident of securing his signature for approximately €40 million.
The relationship between Álvarez and Romero extends beyond their achievements with the Argentina national team. Separated by three years in age, the two players share a strong personal bond, with Romero exercising significant influence over the young striker. Following his transfer to Atlético from Manchester City in 2024, Álvarez stated in his first interview with Marca that Romero was the toughest defender he had ever faced in his career.
Atlético’s directors believe that integrating Romero into the squad will fortify their defensive options while creating a familiar environment capable of dissuading Álvarez from seeking an exit to Barcelona. The club remains optimistic that finalizing a deal with Tottenham will stabilise the situation and settle Álvarez’s future in Madrid.
