Australia Show Full Strength for Bangladesh Test Challenge

Bangladesh Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto believes Australia’s decision to name a full-strength squad for the upcoming two-match home Test series is a clear indication that the visitors are taking Bangladesh seriously.

Australia have recalled several of their leading Test players, including regular captain Pat Cummins, experienced fast bowler Josh Hazlewood and off-spinner Nathan Lyon, all of whom have been returning from injury or extended periods away from the side. The two Tests are scheduled to be played in Darwin and Mackay as part of the World Test Championship cycle.

Speaking to reporters in Mirpur after the final of the Notun Kuri Cricket Tournament on Friday, Shanto said he could not recall seeing Australia approach a series against Bangladesh in quite the same way before.

“Looking at this squad, it is clear that Australia are not taking Bangladesh lightly,” Shanto said. “I have never seen something like this before. When playing against our team, big sides sometimes make a number of changes or experiment with their combinations. But this time, they have selected a very strong squad. As a team, we can see this as an achievement. They have not taken the series lightly.”

Australia’s approach is particularly notable given their previous limited-overs visit to Bangladesh in June. The visitors did not arrive with their strongest possible squads for the one-day international and Twenty20 series, and Bangladesh managed to beat Australia in the ODI series. The upcoming Tests, however, are expected to present a considerably tougher challenge, with Australia opting for experienced players who have played a major role in their success in the longest format.

For Bangladesh, the series represents an opportunity to measure themselves against one of the leading Test teams in the world. Shanto acknowledged the scale of the challenge but insisted that his side must focus on its own performance rather than the reputation of the opposition.

“This is a very big opportunity for us,” he said. “Now is the time to show how well we can play against one of the best teams in the world. When you look at their squad, you can understand that they have not taken this series lightly. We have to give our best.”

The Bangladesh camp is also monitoring the fitness of key players. Shanto said the availability of Litton Das and Nahid Rana would depend on assessments by the team’s medical and physiotherapy staff.

“The physiotherapist and medical team are working on their injuries. Everything will depend on their reports. There is nothing more we can say at this stage,” the captain said.

While the immediate focus is on the Test series, Shanto also spoke about the potential of grassroots cricket to strengthen Bangladesh’s future talent pool. He expressed hope that tournaments such as the Notun Kuri Cricket Tournament would help identify players capable of progressing to the national team.

“Of course, players can emerge from here and eventually make their way into the national team. That would be very good for Bangladesh cricket,” he said. “Whether they come from Rajshahi or any other part of the country, it will be a positive development.”

Shanto also praised the cricket infrastructure in Rajshahi, saying the region has been active in developing young players and that better facilities could help produce more high-quality cricketers in the years ahead.

“There is a lot of work being done for cricket in Rajshahi. The academies also provide good facilities. If these opportunities can be expanded further, more talented cricketers could emerge from the region in the future,” he said.

Bangladesh’s preparations for the Australia series will therefore carry significance beyond the two matches themselves. Facing a near full-strength Australian side will test the visitors’ ability to handle pace, spin and sustained pressure in unfamiliar conditions, while also offering Bangladesh an important benchmark against one of the strongest teams in Test cricket.

Bangladesh women’s team captain Nigar Sultana was also present at the event in Mirpur on Thursday.
