Awami League Not Our Enemy, Will Soon Merge with BNP: MP Nasir

In a striking political statement that has sent ripples through local party circles, Nasir Chowdhury, the Member of Parliament for the Sunamganj-2 constituency, declared that the Awami League should not be viewed as an adversary. Speaking at a public rally, the veteran politician asserted that the two historic parties would eventually coalesce, pointing to their shared history during critical national movements as a foundation for future political unity.

Addressing a July Remembrance Rally organised by the Upazila Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) at Thana Point in Dirai municipality on Thursday, 6 August, MP Nasir Chowdhury made his position clear to the gathered crowd. He reminded the audience that members of the Awami League were political allies rather than permanent foes, highlighting that both factions had once stood shoulder-to-shoulder in historical struggles. He expressed strong confidence that, in the near future, the Awami League would merge into the ranks of the BNP.

Beyond his comments on inter-party unity, the lawmaker addressed growing internal tensions within the local party unit. He asserted that the official gathering at Thana Point represented the sole legitimate BNP rally in the area. Pointing directly to rival factions attempting to convene a separate program on 8 August, Chowdhury cautioned supporters against elements seeking to sow division within party ranks. He urged grassroots activists to remain vigilant against such disruptive efforts.

Responding to recent financial misconduct allegations leveled against him by political opponents, Chowdhury firmly rejected any wrongdoing. He explained that he stands alone without brothers involved in his affairs and recalled how his own residence had previously been confiscated. He dismissed the corruption accusations as baseless propaganda orchestrated by individuals who were denied opportunities for graft under his leadership. Chowdhury challenged critics to consult the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) directly to inspect official budgetary allocations before making reckless claims, adding that he would maintain a zero-tolerance stance against corruption for as long as he remains in office.

The remembrance rally was presided over by Upazila BNP Convener Amir Hossain and moderated by Municipal BNP Joint Convener Faruk Sardar. The event also featured speeches from prominent local figures, including MP Nasir Chowdhury’s wife, Parvin Akhtar, and former Upazila BNP Vice-President Shamsul Islam, alongside numerous leaders representing various affiliate bodies of the party.
