Bangladesh Captain Targets Respectful Return Against Australia

Bangladesh Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has set his sights on earning respect through competitive cricket when his side face Australia in a two-match Test series, while making it clear that victory remains the ultimate ambition.

Before the pre-series press conference began in Mirpur, Najmul briefly interrupted the usual question-and-answer session with a question of his own. He wanted to know what the media expected from Bangladesh in the upcoming series against Australia.

One journalist replied, ‘Good cricket.’

Najmul responded with a smile and a touch of humour, asking whether the journalist would be satisfied if he used the same phrase himself.

Another journalist then referred to comments from chief selector Habibul Bashar, who had previously said that Bangladesh wanted to return with their honour intact. That answer appeared to satisfy the captain, and the press conference proceeded.

Amid questions about injuries, preparations and the excitement surrounding the tour, Najmul was asked directly about his expectations from the series. He stressed that Bangladesh’s immediate objective was to play well enough to establish themselves as a competitive Test side in Australia.

‘Our main goal will be to play good cricket there and earn respect,’ Najmul said. ‘If we can play competitive cricket, they will certainly invite us again in the future.’

The captain, however, was quick to clarify that Bangladesh would not be travelling merely to make up the numbers.

‘We play every match to win,’ he said. ‘But what is important is how well we can play and how much pressure we can put them under. If we can play two such matches, it may create opportunities for us to play more and more Test cricket there in the future.’

The series carries significance beyond the immediate results. Bangladesh are ending a long wait to return to Australia for Test cricket. Their last Test in the country was played in 2003, meaning more than two decades have passed since they last appeared there in the longest format.

The lengthy gap has meant that several generations of Bangladeshi cricketers have completed their international careers without playing a Test match in Australia. Even Mushfiqur Rahim, one of Bangladesh’s most experienced Test players with a career spanning around two decades and more than 100 Tests, has yet to play a Test on Australian soil.

For Bangladesh, therefore, the series represents both a major sporting challenge and an opportunity to strengthen their position on the international Test stage. Australia have traditionally been among the toughest opponents in their own conditions, where pace, bounce and the demands of long-format cricket can test visiting teams severely.

At the same time, Bangladesh’s progress in Test cricket in recent years has changed the expectations surrounding the national side. Victories have become more regular, and the team now carries a greater sense of belief when facing established opponents. That progress has also brought increased pressure from supporters, who increasingly expect Bangladesh to compete for wins rather than simply avoid heavy defeats.

Najmul believes that rising expectations are a positive sign of the team’s development.

‘One good thing is that our supporters have high expectations from every series,’ he said. ‘They expect us to win every match, and that is a positive aspect. Twenty-three years ago, perhaps that was not the case. If I talk about our achievements, it is a significant one that people in Bangladesh now think about winning against any team.’

The captain’s comments underline the balance Bangladesh will need to maintain in Australia. The team will aim for victories, but it also recognises the broader importance of performing competitively and demonstrating that it belongs at the highest level of Test cricket.

For a side returning to Australia after such a long absence, the two-Test series offers a chance to measure how far Bangladesh have progressed. A strong showing could provide more than immediate results: it could help build confidence, enhance the team’s reputation and potentially encourage more opportunities for Bangladesh to play Test cricket in Australia in the years ahead.
