Bangladesh Cricketer Nayeem Hasan Assaulted by DB Police

A wave of condemnation has hit the Bangladesh sports sector following verified reports that national cricket team off-spinner Nayeem Hasan was physically assaulted and harassed by police officers in Chittagong. The Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) has led the institutional backlash, demanding that the Chittagong Metropolitan Police immediately identify and punish the officers involved in the unprovoked altercation.

The incident unfolded on Thursday night, 12 June, as Hasan was returning to his family home after concluding a Dhaka Premier League match in Savar. Upon reaching the Lalkhan Bazar area of the port city, his vehicle was stopped by law enforcement personnel who identified themselves as members of the Detective Branch (DB).

Brutality at Lalkhan Bazar and Subsequent Detention

According to CWAB’s formal indictment, the intercepting officers acted with immediate hostility. When the international cricketer attempted to speak, an officer grabbed him firmly by the throat to silence him. Despite a crowd of local citizens gathering and repeatedly explaining to the personnel that the individual was national athlete Nayeem Hasan, the officers ignored the appeals and struck him with a pipe.

Hasan was then moved to Khulshi Police Station under formal custody. The welfare association documented that the player faced ongoing psychological harassment and severe verbal abuse inside the station. The aggressive behavior only ceased after Hasan managed to use his mobile phone to contact high-level officials for assistance, forcing the local officers to back away.

Severe Backlash From National Teammates

CWAB President Mohammad Mithun contacted Hasan directly to affirm that the entire professional cricketing fraternity stands united behind him. He noted that such treatment by public servants is completely unacceptable for any citizen of the country.

Hasan’s international teammates have expressed deep distress over the systemic abuse of authority:

“What happened to Nayeem Hasan is deeply concerning and completely unacceptable,” stated veteran batsman Litton Das. “It is heartbreaking to see him go through such suffering. As a colleague and a teammate, I am truly shocked. No citizen deserves this, let alone a national cricketer who has proudly represented Bangladesh.”

All-rounder Mehedi Hasan Miraz and opening batsman Parvez Hossain Emon also issued public statements, characterising the assault as a direct blow to the dignity of the nation’s sporting framework and demanding immediate judicial accountability.
