Bangladesh Dengue Caseload Surpasses 7,000 as Infections Surge

Bangladesh is witnessing a sharp increase in Aedes mosquito-borne dengue cases, with the nationwide total surpassing the 7,000 mark. Health authorities reported 196 new hospitalisations across the country within the last 24 hours. Fortunately, no fresh fatalities were recorded during this period, offering temporary relief amidst the escalating seasonal outbreak.

The latest update was released on Tuesday, 7 July, by the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). According to the report, the ongoing monsoon season has triggered an influx of patients in various regional medical facilities, placing a heavy burden on the local healthcare infrastructure.

The regional distribution of the latest 196 cases reveals that the Barisal division recorded the highest number of daily admissions with 66 patients, followed closely by the Dhaka division—including the twin city corporations—with 52 new cases. Other affected areas include Chattogram with 41 cases, Khulna with 21, Mymensingh with eight, and Rajshahi with six. The Sylhet division registered two new patients, whilst the Rangpur division reported no new hospitalisations over the last 24 hours.

From 1 January up to 7 July, the cumulative number of dengue infections in Bangladesh reached 7,306. A comprehensive breakdown of the national caseload across all administrative divisions highlights the broad geographical impact of the virus:

The total number of fatalities linked to the dengue virus stands at 19 for the current year. Dhaka remains the deadliest region, accounting for eight deaths. Mymensingh recorded five fatalities, followed by Chattogram with three. Meanwhile, Barisal, Khulna, and Rajshahi have each reported a single casualty since January.

Currently, 611 dengue patients are undergoing treatment in various state-run and private hospitals across Bangladesh, with 141 of them admitted within the capital city of Dhaka alone. On a positive note, 139 patients were discharged after successful treatment over the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of recoveries to 6,676 since the start of the year. Public health specialists have urged citizens to eliminate stagnant water sources around residential properties to disrupt mosquito breeding cycles.
