Bangladesh Foreign Exchange Rates Stabilise Amid Market Shifts

The landscape of Bangladesh’s international trade is evolving rapidly, driven by closer integration with the global economy. As cross-border commercial transactions expand, the domestic foreign exchange market continues to navigate shifting currency valuations to maintain financial equilibrium.

Market observers note that despite adequate foreign currency liquidity, the central bank previously adjusted exchange rates incrementally to fulfil specific structural benchmarks outlined by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). These adjustments triggered a depreciation of the local currency, pushing the interbank exchange rate for the United States dollar up by roughly one taka over the preceding month. However, recent market corrections have seen the greenback retreat from those peaks.

According to reports from central and commercial banking institutions, the interbank rate for the US dollar hovered stably between a lower and upper bracket of 122.85 taka at the beginning of last month. It subsequently climbed to a peak of 123.82 taka before moderating significantly. Today, trading floors report the dollar changing hands at a more moderate rate of 122.20 taka.

Financial analysts attribute this recent stabilisation to rigorous regulatory oversight by the central bank, alongside a steady and robust inflow of expatriate remittances. These factors have collectively narrowed the margin between official banking rates and open-market valuations, easing pressure on importers and retail consumers alike.

Based on data published by Bangladesh Bank and cooperating commercial institutions, the minimum exchange rates for major foreign currencies against the Bangladeshi taka are outlined below.

Currency Name Exchange Rate (BDT)
US Dollar 122.20
