Bangladesh Measles Outbreak: Child Death Toll Surpasses 600

The ongoing measles outbreak in Bangladesh has escalated significantly, with the total number of child fatalities surpassing the 600 mark. According to the latest regular report released on Wednesday by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), seven more children succumbed to measles-related symptoms within the last 24 hours.

The DGHS report specified that these seven fatalities occurred between 8:00 am on Tuesday and 8:00 am on Wednesday. With these latest casualties, the cumulative death toll from the outbreak, which commenced on 15 March, has risen to 601. Out of this total, 511 children died exhibiting symptoms consistent with measles, whilst the health authority officially confirmed that 90 children died from laboratory-verified cases of the disease.

The geographical distribution of the most recent fatalities indicates that the outbreak remains particularly severe in central and north-central Bangladesh. Of the seven children who died within the recorded 24-hour window, six were from the Dhaka Division, and one was from the Mymensingh Division.

Furthermore, the disease continues to spread across the country at a notable rate. The DGHS recorded 1,210 new symptomatic cases nationwide during the same 24-hour period. Out of these newly reported symptomatic individuals, 55 patients were officially confirmed to have contracted measles following clinical diagnoses and laboratory assessments.

Since the official tracking of this outbreak began on 15 March, health authorities have documented a total of 74,572 patients presenting with measles symptoms across the country. Through rigorous testing and medical evaluation, the total number of laboratory-confirmed measles cases has reached 9,191.

The surge in infections has placed a substantial burden on the healthcare infrastructure. A total of 60,158 individuals exhibiting measles symptoms have required hospital admission since mid-March. Despite the pressure on medical facilities, recoveries remain high; the report confirmed that 55,942 patients have successfully recovered and been discharged from various hospitals across the country.
