Bangladesh Under-20 head coach Gerard Jones has raised fresh concerns over his personal safety after an altercation with an assistant coach at the team hotel reportedly led him to call the national emergency service and request police assistance.
Jones, a British coach working with Bangladesh’s youth side, made the allegations in a video message posted on Facebook on Monday night, 24 August. He claimed that he had been physically assaulted in the workplace and said he contacted the police because he felt he needed protection.
“I was assaulted in my workplace. I had to call the police in self-defence,” Jones said in the video message. He also claimed that he had informed the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) about the incident and sent photographs showing injuries he had sustained.
According to Jones, however, he did not receive the support or assistance he expected from the federation after reporting the matter. He said he continued to feel unsafe and expressed frustration at having to seek help repeatedly while carrying out his professional responsibilities in Bangladesh.
The allegations follow a reported confrontation involving Jones and an assistant coach at the team’s hotel. The incident reportedly included an argument and physical pushing, after which Jones contacted the emergency service and police attended the hotel.
Jones also sought to reject reports of a strained relationship with the team’s goalkeeping coach. He said there was no dispute between them and described their professional relationship as a positive one.
“There is no problem with the goalkeeping coach. We have a very good relationship,” Jones said. He added that they regularly joke with each other, visit one another’s rooms and discuss tactical matters related to matches.
The coach alleged that someone was deliberately spreading false information in an attempt to create confusion within the team environment. He did not identify the person or group he believed was responsible.
Jones also suggested that personal interests could be behind the situation. He pointed to his previous professional experience, saying he had never before been physically attacked at his workplace or needed to seek assistance from police or the British diplomatic mission for his personal security during his career.
The timing of the dispute has added significance, as Bangladesh’s Under-20 side is preparing for an Asian Football Confederation competition. Jones believes the team has a strong opportunity to achieve a positive result and questioned why such difficulties were emerging at a time when the squad should be focused on preparation and performance.
The coach’s allegations have placed the team environment and the responsibility of ensuring the safety of coaching staff under renewed scrutiny. For a youth national side preparing for an important continental competition, maintaining a stable working atmosphere is particularly significant, as disputes within the coaching set-up can affect preparation as well as the wider team environment.
