According to statements provided by the deceased’s uncle, Abdul Kadir, Sohag had gone to graze cattle near the border area in the morning, as he routinely did. BSF personnel allegedly opened fire on him without provocation. When Sohag failed to return home following the sound of gunshots, anxious family members launched a search operation along the border. They subsequently found his bullet-ridden body lying prone near the frontier line.

Relatives and local villagers rushed Sohag to the Chunarughat Upazila Health Complex in a critical condition. Upon examination, Dr Sirajam Munira, the duty physician at the health facility, officially declared him dead on arrival.

Officer-in-Charge of Chunarughat Police Station, Md Saiful Islam, confirmed the death and stated that law enforcement had taken charge of the body. He noted that the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting and the precise cause of death would be established following a comprehensive post-mortem examination at the district hospital morgue.

Attempts to reach officials of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) 55 Battalion in Habiganj for an official statement were unsuccessful. Repeated phone calls to senior personnel went unanswered, and text messages sent via messaging applications drew no immediate response.

The tragic incident has sparked widespread anxiety, grief, and fear among residents living in the Chimtibil border belt. Incidents of firing along the Bangladesh-India border remain a persistent point of tension between the two neighboring nations, despite high-level bilateral commitments to eliminate lethal violence along the frontier. The bereaved family has appealed to government authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the shooting and pursue diplomatic measures to deliver justice for the victim.
