Bank Employee Dies in Tragic Road Crash Caused by Illegal Sand Sprawl

A tragic road accident in Akkelpur upazila, Joypurhat, claimed the life of a 45-year-old bank employee on Wednesday morning. The deceased, identified as Abdul Hannan, was killed on the spot after his motorcycle collided with a moving stone-laden lorry near Keshail village.

Hannan, a resident of Rokanpur village in Badalgachhi upazila under Naogaon district, was the son of Ramjan Ali. He worked as an office assistant at the Akkelpur branch of Rupali Bank PLC in Joypurhat. Alongside his formal employment, Hannan engaged in small-scale farming to supplement his family’s income.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:00 am near a local madrasa in Keshail. According to family members, Hannan had left his home early in the morning with sacks of freshly harvested hyacinth beans strapped to the back of his motorcycle. His routine was to sell the produce at the local Akkelpur market before reporting for his daily shift at the bank.

Local residents reported that dangerous roadside hazards significantly contributed to the fatal crash. For a considerable period, commercial sand traders had been illegally piling mounds of sand along the northern side of the road, encroaching directly onto the tarmac. At the time of the collision, a stationary lorry was parked squarely on the thoroughfare to load sand from the roadside heaps.

As Hannan approached the section of the road, his path was severely constricted by the stationary vehicle. Simultaneously, a moving lorry carrying stones approached from the opposite direction, creating a hazardous bottleneck. The driver of the oncoming lorry attempted to steer off the road into the adjoining ditch to avoid a collision, but the evasive manoeuvre proved insufficient. Hannan’s motorcycle struck the stone-laden vehicle, inflicting severe injuries that caused him to die at the scene.

Outraged residents pointed to the illegal sand stockpiles as the primary cause of the obstruction, noting that the fatal bottleneck would not have existed had the stationary lorry not blocked the active lane. Local community members have urged authorities to enforce road safety regulations strictly and clear all unauthorized roadside commercial hazards to prevent similar tragedies.

Following the accident, local emergency services and officers from Akkelpur Police Station arrived at the location. The Officer-in-Charge of Akkelpur Police Station, Md. Habibur Rahman, confirmed that the body was initially taken to the Badalgachhi Upazila Health Complex before being handed over to the grieving family after necessary legal formalities. Police have recorded a formal complaint regarding the incident and launched an investigation to determine accountability.
