Jannatul Ferdous Chowdhury (28), a Chhatra League leader from Barlekha Upazila in Moulvibazar, was arrested on Sunday afternoon under the Anti-Terrorism Act and subsequently sent to prison following a court order.
According to police and local sources, to mark the death anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on Saturday morning (15 August), Jannatul Ferdous laid flowers before a portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bhataiya Government Primary School near her home. During this time, she raised a black flag alongside the national flag. Police stated that she recorded photos and video footage of the programme and shared them on her personal Facebook account. Upon taking notice of the incident, police arrested her from her home in Kulaura on Saturday afternoon.
She was handed over to the Barlekha Police Station late Saturday night. When she was presented before the Barlekha Senior Judicial Magistrate Court on Sunday afternoon (16 August), the judge denied her bail application and ordered her to be remanded to prison.
The arrested leader, Jannatul Ferdous Chowdhury, is the daughter of the late Abdul Musabbir Chowdhury of Bhataiya village in Kulaura Upazila. She is the younger sister of Fateha Ferdous Chowdhury Popy, former Vice Chairman of Kulaura Upazila Council and a leader of the Upazila Mahila Awami League.
Police further reported that on the night of 11 April 2025, members of the Chhatra League brought out a flash procession in front of the Upazila Livestock Office in Barlekha town. Political slogans were chanted during the procession, and political graffiti was written on the boundary wall of the livestock office. Evidence of her involvement in that incident was discovered. Following the event on 12 April 2025, police filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Barlekha Police Station against 15 identified leaders and activists, along with 140 to 150 unnamed individuals.
Confirming the matter on Monday afternoon, Inspector (Investigation) Obaidul Islam of Barlekha Police Station stated that evidence was found regarding Jannatul Ferdous Chowdhury’s involvement in the 2025 procession and wall-writing incident under the Anti-Terrorism Act case. Consequently, she was shown arrested in that case and presented before the court on Sunday afternoon.
