BCB Considers Three Key Venues for Asia Cup Hosting

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is evaluating three of its primary international cricket grounds to host the upcoming edition of the Asia Cup. Mirpur, Sylhet, and Chittagong are currently under serious consideration as the headline venues for the prestigious regional tournament. Before a final structural commitment is locked in, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has requested exhaustive technical data and logistical briefs regarding the capacities and facilities of these proposed locations.

The tournament is tentatively earmarked to take place within the June-July window next year, reverting to the traditional One Day International (ODI) format. Although the governing council of Asian cricket has yet to release a definitive schedule, preparation is quietly gathering pace behind the scenes.

Regular International Hubs Proposed to ACC

Saiful Ibrahim Ahmed, the Chairman of the BCB Security Committee, shared these venue developments while speaking to members of the press on Tuesday. He clarified that the national cricket board has presented its top tier of international stadiums to meet the stringent hosting protocols required by the ACC.

“We are heavily focusing on Mirpur, Chittagong, and Sylhet, which are our standard international venues,” Ahmed stated during the media briefing. He added that while the paperwork is under review, absolutely nothing has been finalised yet. If the Asia Cup is officially confirmed to be staged on Bangladeshi soil, the tournament will provide a monumental spectacle for local supporters who have been eagerly awaiting the return of a major continental competition.

The security chief also noted that the ACC recently re-engaged with the BCB administration, seeking precise details on transport links, spectator management, hospitality infrastructure, and team security arrangements across the three target districts. A final approval regarding the allocation of matches is highly anticipated within the coming days once the ACC delegation reviews the submitted portfolios.

End of an Eleven-Year Regional Tournament Drought

Securing the event would represent a major milestone for sports administration in the country. Bangladesh last hosted the Asia Cup in 2016, though that iteration was uniquely played in a Twenty20 format. The last time the traditional, full-length ODI variant of the tournament was held across Bangladeshi venues was way back in 2014, marking a potential eleven-year gap for local fans of the 50-over format.

By utilizing Mirpur’s historic Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium alongside the scenic surrounds of the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium and the coastal Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong, the BCB hopes to showcase its modern stadium upgrades. Moving the fixtures beyond the capital city will also allow broader regions of the country to experience international tournament cricket first-hand.
