Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officers intercepted a major smuggling attempt along the Ghumdhum border in Bandarban’s Naikhongchhari upazila, seizing a substantial shipment of synthetic drugs alongside a foreign firearm and ammunition. The anti-smuggling operation yielded 246,000 Burmese Yaba pills, a foreign-made handgun, and five live rounds of ammunition brought across the frontier from Myanmar.
The raid was conducted late on Monday night, 10 August, in the Nayapara border area within Ghumdhum Union.
Acting on precise intelligence, patrol teams from the Ghumdhum Border Outpost (BOP) alerted command officers to an impending cross-border trafficking attempt involving weapons and narcotics. Following instructions from the Commanding Officer of the Cox’s Bazar Battalion (34 BGB), a specialized operational team led by Second-in-Command Major Md Mehedi Hasan Ashik deployed to strategic positions along the frontier.
Under the cover of darkness, border guards spotted suspicious movement in the Nayapara sector, approximately 130 yards inside Bangladeshi territory from main border pillar number 31. As the BGB team closed in to intercept the group, the traffickers detected their approach, abandoned their contraband, and fled into the dense forest terrain toward the border line.
A thorough search of the immediate area led to the recovery of the abandoned haul, which contained 246,000 Yaba tablets, one foreign firearm, and five rounds of live ammunition. BGB officials suspect that the contraband was smuggled across the porous international border with the intent of distribution across various inland networks. Due to the rapid retreat of the suspects under dark conditions, no arrests were made at the scene, and the identities of the traffickers remain unconfirmed.
Lieutenant Colonel S M Khairul Alam, Commanding Officer of the Cox’s Bazar Battalion (34 BGB), stated that border security forces maintain a strict zero-tolerance stance against cross-border crime, drug trafficking, and firearm smuggling. He confirmed that surveillance, intelligence gathering, and specialized patrolling will be intensified along vulnerable stretches of the border to counter organized networks. Legal procedures regarding the seized weapons, ammunition, and narcotics are currently under way.
