A highly decomposed and unidentified body has been recovered from a paddy field in a remote wetland area of north-eastern Bangladesh, prompting an official police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
The discovery was made in Dhali Haor, located in the Borantar area under Mohanganj Upazila in Netrokona District, on Monday evening. According to local accounts, farmers were returning home after harvesting paddy when they noticed a human body lying in a submerged rice field. The alarming sight quickly drew the attention of residents, who informed the authorities.
Police from Mohanganj Upazila arrived at the scene after being notified. Due to the remote location—approximately 27 kilometres from the local police station—officers faced delays in reaching and securing the site. The body was subsequently recovered around 8:00 pm and transported to the police station before being sent on Tuesday morning for post-mortem examination at Netrokona Sadar Hospital morgue.
Local Union Parishad member Ashraf Chowdhury of Gaglajur Union stated that villagers first spotted the body near a sluice gate adjacent to the paddy fields in Dhali Haor. He estimated that the deceased was a man of around 40 years of age, although no identification documents or belongings were found at the scene.
Police officials noted that the body was in an advanced stage of decomposition, making immediate identification difficult. Fingerprints could not be obtained, and authorities believe that the condition of the remains may significantly hinder efforts to establish the victim’s identity through conventional means.
The Officer-in-Charge of Mohanganj Police Station, Hafizul Islam, confirmed that initial observations suggest the possibility of foul play. He stated that the body may have been dumped in the secluded wetland area after death. However, he emphasised that the investigation remains at an early stage and no definitive conclusions have been reached.
Law enforcement agencies have launched a formal inquiry to determine the identity of the deceased, the cause of death, and whether any criminal involvement is linked to the incident. Further forensic analysis from the post-mortem examination is expected to provide crucial insights.
