A young man was rescued alive after jumping into the Yamuna River from a bridge in India’s Uttar Pradesh, while the woman who had reportedly agreed to die alongside him walked away moments before the jump, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The incident took place on Thursday, 16 July, on the New Yamuna Bridge in Prayagraj. Police identified the rescued man as Anu Gupta.
According to police, preliminary findings based on eyewitness accounts suggest that the couple had travelled to the bridge with the intention of ending their lives together. Investigators believe the decision had been made in advance and that the pair had discussed their plan before arriving at the location.
Witnesses told officers that the couple stood on the bridge for several moments, apparently sharing a final conversation. Shortly afterwards, Anu Gupta leapt into the Yamuna River in line with what investigators believe had been their joint plan.
The situation took an unexpected turn, however, when the young woman chose not to follow him. Instead of jumping into the river, she remained on the bridge, watching as the man disappeared into the water. Witnesses said she then calmly left the scene on foot without attempting to intervene or alert emergency services.
The incident was quickly reported to local authorities. Police officers and members of a local diving team arrived at the bridge without delay and launched an emergency rescue operation. After an intensive search lasting some time, rescuers managed to locate Anu Gupta in the river and pull him to safety alive.
He was taken for initial medical treatment, where doctors assessed his condition before police completed the necessary legal formalities. Authorities later handed him over to his family. Police have since confirmed that he is safe and recovering.
Investigators are now working to establish what led to the apparent suicide pact and whether any personal, emotional or other circumstances contributed to the incident. Officers are also attempting to identify and locate the young woman who accompanied Gupta to the bridge. Her statement is expected to play an important role in determining the sequence of events and the reasons behind her decision to leave the scene.
Police have said that further legal action, if required, will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the importance of recognising signs of emotional distress and ensuring that individuals experiencing a mental health crisis receive timely support. Authorities continue to appeal for cooperation from anyone who may have witnessed the events or can assist investigators with additional information.
